Farmsteads

1991 – 1993

This series consists of photographs made at small-scale dairy farms mainly in the region of Midden-Delfland, but also in Krimpenerwaard. These farms are characterized by a great variety of situations in stables, barns and work places. These situations appear to be disorderly, but are in fact not chaotic at all, being the result of the pressure of work. Here, images can be created that show a seemingly incoherent accumulation of installations, machines, tools and all kinds of materials – resulting in balanced, complex compositions without an obvious focal point and without an unambiguous narrative, yet showing the traces that people leave temporarily.
