Edges of the city - work in progress

march 2007

Currently the project ‘Edges of the city’ is taking shape in Amsterdam. The series is based on the figurative edges and borders of the entire community in a metropolis. These edges can be taken in many senses: socially, culturally, economically, religiously, as regards housing, mentally, physically, as regards recreation and practice of sports – edges remote from the realities of undisturbed everyday life. The series consists of images of spaces from which man has temporarily withdrawn. They look like stage sets during an intermission. The series prompts the question what kind of people enter these sets, what role they play and how they relate to the rest of society. This approach has been tried before in Amersfoort. In Amsterdam, the range of subjects that lend themselves for this project is much wider, as is the number of options with each subject, allowing a more critical selection. The accent shifts toward rawer, more extreme images, even more towards the edge.
